For the first time in history, the U.S. Supreme Court will judge a case directly involving the freedom of Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRCs) throughout the U.S., including Portland.
The Wall Street Journal reports: “The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to take up an appeal by antiabortion pregnancy centers challenging a California law that requires them to tell patients about the availability of publicly funded pregnancy services, including for abortion.”
The 2015 California law requires California PRCs to use specific language to tell these women about what the state of California declares to be their reproductive rights, and to provide the phone numbers and contacts and addresses of abortion providers. Such laws force Pregnancy Centers, including First Image and those that work for us, to promote a practice we find ethically reprehensible is a clear violation of our 1st amendment rights and religious liberty.
This is the same kind of law Planned Parenthood attempted to pass in Oregon. In 2007, 2011, and 2013, they introduced bills into committee in Salem seeking to coerce Oregon PRCs into regulations that would violate our convictions about the sanctity of human life, our freedom of speech, and our freedom of religion. By God’s grace, these initiatives failed to advance beyond the Senate committees.
The future freedom of the PRCs of First Image here in Portland, in Oregon, and throughout the U.S., to offer alternatives to abortion to those choosing to come to our centers, without promoting abortion at the same time, depends on this Supreme Court decision.
This is a call to prayer.
Please join me/us in prayer that the Lord will continue to grant mercy to the thousands of women in Portland considering abortion, and to all those throughout our country facing pregnancy decisions, by convicting the justices of SCOTUS to overturn this California law, and to prevent further such laws in Oregon and other states. Pray for the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) attorneys arguing this case on behalf of PRCs. Pray that the organizations seeking to silence voices like PRCs that promote life will be thwarted and that our freedom to offer life in the Name of Christ will be more firmly established through this process.
We will keep you posted on developments in this case.
