A young woman walked into our clinic with her boyfriend and mom. She looked very nervous and seemed shell-shocked after finding out that she was pregnant and could not believe it. She just kept saying, “I didn’t think this would happen.” Her boyfriend sat through the remainder of the appointment emotionless, sharing he wanted her to have an abortion. She said that she just could not imagine going through with one but would consider it. She didn’t want to lose him. Towards the end of the ultrasound, she made up her mind to continue with the abortion; she just wasn’t ready for a baby.
Days after the appointment, I was unable to follow up with this woman over the phone and prayed that God to make a way to reach her. A few moments later while I sat there wondering what to do, the receptionist told me that I had a call, and it was that patient! “You said that I could call you if I needed anything.” In my hand was her file. This was the girl I had been trying to get in touch with. I was completely amazed at how quickly God had answered my prayer. She told me that she was going to be moving away to live with family and wanted to talk to me before she left. She expressed her fears about all of her options and added that her boyfriend broke up with her. Also, her family was split. Most of them wanted her to abort, but a few urged her not to. She ended that conversation saying that she was going to have an abortion even though she didn’t want to.
I asked if I could call her once more before she moved, which gave her a few days to think about what we had discussed. I sat there reeling after that conversation. God had just opened a door, but nothing seemed to come of it. I felt like I was on a roller coaster.
A few days later I called her back, and she picked up immediately. She seemed happy, which was so different from the girl I spoke to a few days ago. She had told me that she had changed her mind. She was going to continue the pregnancy and go through with an open adoption. My heart leaped! I am so thankful for the ways God answers prayer and cares deeply for our patients.
