In this bleak and rainy winter, it’s been easy for me to feel down and discouraged— about life, about what the Lord is doing, and about this mission that is dear to His heart. One thing that keeps me going in seasons like this, though, are the stories of hope that we continually hear from our clinic staff. Here’s one that was just shared with me:
A patient came to us after taking a few pregnancy tests at home with a positive result. She received services at our clinic before and remembered “how great [we] all were.” During her appointment, we talked about her feelings towards being pregnant. She expressed her excitement and couldn’t imagine doing anything other than parenting. When I asked about the father of the baby and his thoughts around his desired outcome, she became upset. She stated they had been together for many years and is a great dad, but he didn’t want her to be pregnant again. He wanted her to abort, and she was feeling pressure from him to do so. She stated she would never abort and if she had to raise this baby on her own, she would.
During the ultrasound, our patient was so happy to see the viable pregnancy and flickering heartbeat. She was offered another ultrasound, and when she came back, she arrived with the father of the baby. During this appointment, she shared with me that he had completely changed his mind and was excited to have the baby. During the ultrasound, it was beautiful to see the emotions that he was experiencing. He couldn’t stop smiling, crying, and commenting on the heartbeat and images of the baby. All the while, our patient held his hand and smiled. Even though she was prepared to parent alone, it was obvious to all of us in the room that her dream to parent this child together was happening. They left smiling and looking at the ultrasound pictures, together, as a family.
